Fertilizer Shortages Keep Prices High / Combine Sensor Calibration

Fertilizer Update by Rob Fritz

Supply shortages and delivery delays have kept fertilizer prices higher than they should be. Phosphates are flat. Potash is up, but urea is softening. Expect these trends to continue through the fall.

Combine Sensor Calibration

With harvest underway, make sure you are getting accurate yield data from your combine by properly calibrating the moisture sensor and yield monitor. It is a good idea to calibrate these each season. It can be done many ways, but usually involves harvesting a certain amount of crop and checking the weight or bushels with a weigh wagon or scale ticket. The moisture reading can be checked against a portable moisture tester. If you’re not familiar with how to calibrate your machine’s system, check the operators manual for step-by-step instructions. It might not seem like much, but if the calibration is off a small percentage over the course of a field or whole farm, it can be a significant factor on your bottom line. This information should be as accurate as possible especially if you’d like to use yield maps to make prescription planting maps next spring.
