Urea Prices Drop / Monsanto Acquires Precision Planting Inc.

Fertilizer Update by Rob Fritz

Rob Fritz - rob.f@heftyseed.com

Urea prices are dropping in the Twin Cities, but supply is still short.  Terminal-to-farm trucking has been difficult to arrange, which has been slowing deliveries of fertilizer to the farm.  Supplies of 28% are still good, and pricing is stable. Monsanto Acquires Precision Planting Inc.

On May 23, it was officially announced that Monsanto had purchased Precision Planting Inc.  Precision Planting is a manufacturer of aftermarket planter technology developed to improve seed singulation, placement, and monitoring.  They build replacement parts to “finger style” and vacuum meters, along with their own line of replacement meters for John Deere and Kinze planters.  Precision Planting also has their own line of planter monitors (Seed Sense 20/20), pneumatic down pressure, and variable rate control. The acquisition will become part of Monsanto’s Integrated Farming Systems division and for now will continue to operate through Precision Planting’s current dealer network.
