Fertilizer Prices Continue Slight Declines / Harvest Safety on the Road

Fertilizer Update by Rob Fritz

Fertilizer prices are heading down. Urea is now available in the Twin Cities for less than $260.00/ton. This puts dry N at a huge price advantage over liquid sources as 28% has remained at the same higher in-season price level. The prices for P and K have remained steady and look to continue that trend until July/August early fill pricing is out.

Dig to Check Seeding When Planting

For the most part planting has wrapped up in our area. There are still quite a few acres that need to be planted due to either wet fields that can’t be planted yet or areas that need to be replanted. As you’re planting keep in mind that what your monitor, display, or iPad shows you is only a reading and isn’t always an exact representation of what’s actually going on behind the planter. We all trust technology, but it never hurts to get out and dig seed. No matter what type of drive planter you have – ground, hydraulic or electric – and whether or not you have any row shut-offs, it is best to get out and check to make sure the planter is actually doing what your monitor is telling you. It’s way easier to sit in the cab and watch everything work, but if a sensor isn’t reading or a setting got changed or some part of your planter system is new to you, spending 15 minutes digging seed will be well worth it in the long run and you won’t have to wait until the plants start to emerge to see how close your settings were because at that point it’s hard to go back and make corrections.
